For automotive manufacturers, the issue of sustainable and responsible action is more in focus than ever. At Hyundai, sustainability, environmental protection and respectful treatment of people have long been part of the corporate DNA.
The Hyundai brand vision "Progress for Humanity" hints at it: Hyundai is thinking big and sustainable as we face global challenges. That is why the manufacturer announced its corporate goal of "Climate Neutral 2045" at the IAA Mobility 2021 and is working flat out on environmentally friendly mobility concepts for today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.
Climate neutral 2045 - Hyundai is on its way
By continuously optimizing all processes in the value chain, Hyundai is on a direct course toward a sustainable future - and already has its sights firmly set on an ambitious milestone: a balanced CO2 footprint by 2045 - worldwide.
Electromobility
Hyundai has the most diverse electric model range in Europe and is a leader in important future technologies, such as the development of vehicle-to-grid. Because Hyundai always relies on renewable energy sources, there is "Charge myHyundai". For each charging process, the manufacturer feeds the equivalent amount of energy consumed back into the power grid as green electricity.
In addition, Hyundai will no longer sell vehicles with combustion engines in Europe from 2035. Last year, Hyundai already marketed two-thirds of its vehicles with alternative drives. From 2026, all Hyundai model series in Germany will be offered with alternative drives. Currently, Hyundai offers three fully electric models - the IONIQ 6, IONIQ 5 and KONA electric. With the establishment of its own sub-brand IONIQ, Hyundai is clearly focusing on electric mobility and communicating this strategy impressively.
CO2-optimized manufacturing processes and supply chains
The goal of being climate-neutral by 2045 applies to all production stages and business units. By electrifying the product range and investing in forward-looking forms of energy such as hydrogen, Hyundai is on the way to a fully sustainable value chain.
Hydrogen as the power source of the future for mobility
Only by producing hydrogen with renewable energy can mankind solve the problem of future energy supply and storage. Hyundai has 20 years of experience in fuel cell technology. In 2013, the Korean automaker was the first company in the world to launch the first production model, the ix35 Fuel Cell. With the NEXO, Hyundai is expanding its leadership in alternative powertrains. Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility's joint venture with Swiss company H2 Mobility has marked a significant step in H2-based commercial transportation. Global players are increasingly integrating Hyundai fuel cell propulsion technology into their trucks and heavy-duty vehicles or ordering the Hyundai fuel cell truck Xcient FC outright.
Renewable raw materials in the production of cars
The interior of the IONIQ 5 and 6 features materials such as organic paints or recycled yarns made from plastic bottles. The seat covers contain raw materials made from organic sugar cane. The floor mats are made from recycled plastic waste from the world's oceans, and in the case of the IONIQ 6, even the entire interior carpet. In the IONIQ 6, the paint for the front and rear aprons and for the side moldings is made from recycled used tires.
Cleaning up the oceans from plastic waste
Hyundai's partnership with the Dutch marine conservation organization "Healthy Seas" just celebrated its second birthday. On several coasts of Europe and Southeast Asia, waters and ocean beaches are being cleaned of plastic waste, especially ghost nets, and the population is being sensitized to the vulnerability of these sensitive ecosystems. The yarn material Econyl©, which is extracted from plastic waste, can be found in many textiles, but also, for example, in the floor mats of the Hyundai IONIQ 5.
Partnership support in the field of soccer
Sustainability also plays a decisive role at Hyundai in the area of soccer. The Korean automaker has been Eintracht Frankfurt's mobility and premium partner since the 2020/2021 season. But it's not just the club that is being equipped with vehicles; Hyundai is also thinking about fan mobility, for example with environmentally friendly vehicles for fans traveling together.
As part of the "The Future for DicH2" campaign, supporters of the club can also get acquainted with hydrogen technology with an exclusive special edition Hyundai NEXO as a car subscription and at the same time express their passion for the club.
Tree planting campaign in Germany
For every IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 sold in Germany, Hyundai plants a tree. In cooperation with the PLANT-MY-TREE initiative, a new near-natural mixed forest is being created on a designated clear-cut area in North Rhine-Westphalia, which will be deprived of any economic use for 99 years and can grow just as nature dictates. This is another original way for IONIQ buyers to become climate protectors.
